Why does Gibson do this? (58 Flying V)
I recently started looking at Gibson Flying V's and noticed that they are treated very differently when compared to most of Gibsons other guitars.
The Les Paul has variations at every price point, but the original 58 V shape starts at $5.5k!
I just don't get it.

As long as Gibson is some kind of collector's game where you pay for basically the brand I just can't participate. I hear people buy Gibson for resell value but than you have to protect it from damage which is exactly what isn't fun. Guitars get thrown around a lot. And they should. Sucking the fun out of your life to protect your "asset" isn't exactly what I would imagine.

I am still primarily a Tube amp guy. At present, I own 16 of them, Ranging from 1-watt to 160-watts. I have (3) 4x12 full stacks, (1) 4x10 full stack, (3) 4x12 half stacks, (5) 2x12 cabinets (2) open back and (3) closed back, (2) 1x12 cabinets, (2) 2X12 combo amps and (2) 2x15 cabinets (yes, I have more cabinets than amp heads). Also have a Headrush Pedalboard, a Headrush Looper board and a pair of Headrush FRFR 108's on stands. I pretty much have every possible venue that I might play, covered. Regardless of venue, I tend to run wet/dry or wet/dry/wet rigs... versatility is always a plus. @ 68, I still have no issue moving any of my rigs... though I try to limit using the full stacks... to outdoor venues. No matter what the trends become in the future... I am pretty much covered. 😁👍🍺

Another example of why Gibson is increasingly hated as a brand by guitar players. But what would I know, I'm a Fender guy. But I don't actually own any American Fenders on principle. I recently paid more for a Japanese ST62-FR than some American strats were available for. The difference with Fender is there's huge variety, reissues are a constant thing, they actually respond to customer demand. They sometimes take risks, and you can choose between Chinese Squire which is a good entry level instrument, Indonesian Squire, which is actually MIM quality nowadays, and often has some pretty daring models by Fender standards, or Mexican Fender which is a solid choice wothna couple of unique models, or Japanese Fender , which has a really unique history and some pretty radical departures from Fender norms, with exceptional quality and playability. This is before you ever get near the premium American Fenders, and as KDH points out, the limited edition collectors guitars sell just fine, as do the Custom Shop Fenders. Fender offers something at literally every price point, and they sell a LOT of instruments. And they don't limit choice, by only offering certain designs in limited runs like Gibson. If you want any of the Fender designs you can have them. But certain guitars are still worth insane money. To me, this is a better business model. I didn't choose Fender, they chose me, because at 16 years old, I bought a Squire, because when I was looking for an electric guitar, the probability of me running into a budget Squire strat was extremely high. But because of this, I ended up becoming completely connected to the Fender Stratocaster, with no other electric guitar really fitting me right. So I always bought Fender. Epiphone isn't like that. They're more expensive, I hated every Epiphone I ever picked up. They were always out of tune and badly intonated, with high actions, muddy pickups and everything else wrong with them. So Gibson crapped in their budget brand so hard back in the day, that they stopped generations of young players growing up to be loyal Gibson players, because they didn't make their brand accessible like Fender. Oh and Gibson won't innovate. If I was in the market for a Les Paul, or a V, or an Explorer, I'd just buy ESP, or something similar. Better features, more practical, and a more realistic price. If I want a Strat, Tele, or Jazzmaster, I have no real need to buy something that's not affiliated with Fender, because the choices are there, at my price point.

And good old KDH does it again, the I want it all and want it now, on my terms. Gibson made the original out of Korina due to the strength of the timber in the neck tenon, epiphone can make the Korina because import restrictions on those timber’s in the US does not exist. Again you throw shade about without industry knowledge and splat your stupid opinions

I'm sick of this company being seen as "the best". I get that they are better quality than a lot of mass-produced, cheap guitars, but are they "$20k brand new" good. I cannot imagine how a solid-body electric guitar is possibly worth that much money new, aside from the fact that some people have too much money and fall for marketing. You could spend $500-$1k on a new guitar from several reputable companies I can think of off the top of my head, and as long as you got something with a neck that feels right to you, has a weight you like, good fretwork and the pickups you want, you're set. Gibson has been making the same handful of guitars for decades. Their headstock design is antiquated: refusal to use an angled joint to keep the headstock from being full of grain runout and being prone to snapping. The bridges they use are the entire reason they have to have that slight angle to the neck (old design, too tall). They expect people to believe that a thin layer of nitro cellulose drastically affects tone (fuck off). It's nonsense. I hope they fail. Honestly, I do.

To put the prices in context: I bought the most expensive PRS SE guitar and it was about 1500 new (1200 for me a year later) for a full hollowbody with flame maple front and back, flame maple binding on the body, neck, and f-holes, abalone bird inlays, a piezo bridge, and a flawless setup. Absolutely blows my mind that people would pay more than that for an Epiphone LP. For that money it has to be an absolutely stellar quality instrument or it's not worth it.

Really love that this video was largely a "vehicle" for a young Irish lad to have a rant about daft shit going on with the guitar world... and I hasten to add that I'm totally on board for it too... I have been fortunate enough to own a 71 V and a 76 Explorer. I sold both and... wait for it... kept my Hondo Revival 2 Explorer as it was a better instrument. Even now, I have a USA built Jackson Randy Rhoads, a BC Rich Warlock (early model), a Japanese Jackson Dinky EX and a Gretsch... I always grab the old Hondo. My advice to anyone wanting pointy guitars is either; Play every pointy guitar no matter what brand it is and pick what you like best, Or; Find a reputable small time Luthier/builder who specialises in V's or Explorers and engage their services. I'm a Luthier myself and some of the builds I see are gorgeous.

The strap placement on the '58 is what would put me off before I even look at the price. It was originally designed to be played in a horizontal position where you put your right hand through the centre of the V behind the bridge, if I remember correctly. If you look at my profile picture on the left, I like to play a high headstock position, kind of like a classical position, and the Les Paul, '58 Explorer and '58 Flying V are all horizontal, neck heavy looking designs. The price would put me off all Gibsons. It's not worth it for a hobby player who got a brand new Jackson Randy Rhoads with a Floyd Rose on Thomann for a fraction of the price, even if I had the life changing money price of a Gibson.

I call bullshit and here’s why. He owns a guitar company he could have brought in two guitars. made identically except for the wood and proved his point. he has the resources to do this, unlike any RUclipsr. he could have even cheated and said they were identical and just change something about the electronics and not told anyone he had every opportunity to prove his point in a realistic way, but he came in to preach. you have the materials and the factory to do this, but all you do is come in and run your mouth? and not only that but those people were in the room with him so they definitely would have been able to tell a difference if there was a difference. No compressed audio there, just the unadulterated truth. The most I have ever been able to get from the Tonewood theory is that the guitar vibrates more or less depending on the type of wood you use which is resonance and that can be perceived differently by different people, but at the end of the day that is not tone that is not sustain that is acoustic resonance. sad part is most people don’t even know the difference between those things. I want to see frequency responses and charts, come on Paul prove it. do something other than run your mouth.

Regarding the “scarcity” of Korina, in Rhett Shull’s Songbirds Museum tour video from early 2020, a guide stated while observing original 1958 Explorers and Flying Vs that Korina is carcinogenic and the factory workers at Gibson were getting sick from it in the manufacturing process. This may have something to do with Gibson not wanting to use Korina too often, but if one factor in halting the production of Korina guitars was for worker’s safety, why do they occasionally resume those runs? Perhaps in the past 66 years Gibson has provided their employees with better PPE while handling that wood. It’s just a theory, and the safety issue may be what drives up the price and scarcity of Korina use.

Gibson doesn't really care about the collector market, in that prices there drop. They do care about cannibalizing their own sales if the used/vintage peices are cheaper than their reissues. This is why you don't see many Norlin era reissues. It's cheaper to buy an original than new. You are asking for a reissue on a guitar that is relatively niche. I don't think most people who want a V have to have a 58. As long as their offerings on 58 reissues is lower than used, they will make a reissue that is priced accordingly. You could also hire a luthier to make you a 58 V that would probably cost less than Gibson reissues, too.

The way I see it is the only real, somewhat affordable Gibson guitar you can get that matches up (nearly perfectly) with it's 50s counterpart is the Les Paul Special. The last time I looked at them they were $1799. That's the one I want. If I hit the lottery, I might go for a Murphy Lab Goldtop, but in my current situation the Special is going to be a difficult acquisition. Another thing that makes my situation tricky is I really like those limited edition Olive Drab specials they came out with a few years ago as Green is my favorite color, but I'll settle for a Yellow one otherwise.
